Q - What is 3D/4D Ultrasound?
A – 3D ultrasound is a medical ultrasound technique often used during pregnancy to provide three dimensional still images of the fetus. 4D ultrasound provides images in motion. Expectant mothers and their families share in the excitement seeing their unborn child and oftentimes the baby’s gender.
In 3D fetal scanning, sound waves are sent straight down and reflected back at different angles. The returning echoes are processed by a sophisticated computer program resulting in a reconstructed three dimensional image of fetus’s surface or internal organs, in much the same way as a CT scan machine constructs a CT scan image from multiple x-rays. 3D ultrasounds allow one to see width, height and depth of images in much the same way as 3D movies but no movement is shown.
Q - Is it safe?
A – Are there any risks to me, or my baby? Extensive studies over 30 years have been conducted and have not shown any cause to harm mother or baby. Routine scanning in the United States is now very accepted and normal. The intensity of the ultrasound in 3D/4D is the same as conventional 2D. Ultrasound works on sound waves that enter the body through the transducer that is placed on the mother’s abdomen. The echo that is generated is what creates the image that you see. If you have any concerns please check with your physician.
Q - What are the benefits of 3D 4D ultrasound?
A – 3D 4D ultrasound is an elective service that allows a clear view the unborn child in the womb. A 3D 4D ultrasound session gives mothers, fathers and family members a unique opportunity to bond with the baby by seeing ultrasound images that technology in the past could not provide!
Q - Is there anything I can do to get better images?
A – Maintaining a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water each day (at least the doctor recommended amount of 64oz per day) will typically get you excellent images. Of course this depends on the position of the baby, placenta, hands, feet and umbilical cord. We ensure you we will do everything possible to get you incredible images.
Q - What if my baby will not cooperate and I do not get clear images or we can not determine the gender?
A – We will invite you back to visit us and rescan your baby for free! We insist that all of our clients leave completely satisfied.
Q - Why does insurance not cover these types of ultrasounds?
A – All of the services provided are exclusively non-diagnostic and are not considered medical procedures, therefore insurance will not cover your elective ultrasounds.
Q - Does this elective ultrasound replace a doctor’s ultrasound?
A – Absolutely not. An elective ultrasound is strictly for your enjoyment. We require that you are under prenatal care with a healthcare provider and provide us with their name and phone number. We are strictly performing a non-diagnostic, non-medical ultrasound. It is not to be used for any medical reason.
Q - What if I do not want to know the gender of my baby?
A – Not a problem at all. We respect your preference just please make sure to let us know when you call to schedule your appointment and again before your session begins. If you do not want to know at the time of the session, we are happy to write it down and place a note in a sealed envelope for you.
Q - When is the best time to get a 3D/4D ultrasound?
A – If you plan to come only one time during your pregnancy for a 3D/4D ultrasound we recommend you come sometime between 24 and 32 weeks, ideally between 26 and 30 weeks. Anytime between 14 and 40 weeks of pregnancy excellent 3D/4D images can be obtained. In the earlier stages, it is very enjoyable seeing the baby moving around and the small, developing body parts. Be aware the baby will sometimes have a somewhat skeletal look in the early stages of pregnancy. The further along you are, the more likely you will be to get more full face images showing physical features. After 34 weeks it is sometimes a challenge to get perfect images due to the baby not having much room to move or he/she is already engaged into your pelvis.
Q - Is there a limit to the number of family and friends I can bring?
A – Absolutely not! Our ultrasound suite is set up to seat up to 10 guests but we will accommodate for however many people you choose to have with you.
Q - Do I need an appointment and how far in advance should I schedule?
A – Yes, at this time we do need you to have an appointment. Many times we can take same day appointments but if you have a specific time and date you would like please try to call in advance to ensure you get that appointment.
Q - Will I be able to leave with the materials included in my package?
A – Absolutely. You will have little to no waiting time before and after your appointment and will go home with everything included in your selected package.
Q - What is a Heartbeat Bear?
A – We record the sound of your baby’s heart beat in womb and put it in the bear, or animal of your choice. You do not need to have a session to do a heart beat bear, just please call and let us know when you would like to come in. It will only take about 5 minutes and you will leave with your bear!
